Two military items: Confederate POW camp found in Georgia, and last US combat brigade leaves Iraq

This from MSNBC yesterday (thanks Joe for calling it to my attention):  Kevin Chapman, a grad student at Georgia Southern found Camp Lawson, used as a replacement for Andersonville, as part of his thesis project.  Amazing.  The camp apparently lasted only about six weeks, Sherman arriving after that–hence the lack of attention given the camp by scholars.  The full story can be found here.

And, on a vaguely related military note, the last troops of the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, crossed the border into Kuwait yesterday.  They were officially the last combat unit to leave Iraq.  For better or worse, we’re in a new phase now.

As Monty said of the 82nd Airborne at St. Vith in the Battle of the Bulge: “They can come back with all honour.”
