Round up of random news–John the Baptist, Anthologize, and Russian woes et. al.

Medievalists.net  is simply the bomb.  Where Peter and Sandra find all this stuff boggles the mind–and that they do it in such an obviously efficient way (since they have lives outside trolling the internet for medieval news) is amazing too.    They recently posted a link to this Youtube video of a Bulgarian shrine reputed to contain relics of John the Baptist.  Indeed…I’m just a wee bit skeptical, despite the enthusiasm of those in the clip.  After all, you don’t have to be a medievalist to know the problems associated with the authenticity of relics…

And here’s a notice about a new exhibit on castles in Leicestershire. I find English castles an interesting phenomenon, since people often take the Edwardian fortresses in Wales or the massive complexes in the north as typical.  In fact, so many castles by the mid-14th century seem to be in a state of decline, or turned over to administrative purposes and no longer kept up.  At least, that’s the case for East Anglia (aside from a couple famous royal castles like Rising).  And there seem to be a lot of ruins from the Anglo-Norman era, sunk into the earth and overgrown, laying around, for which we have few records.  So, an exhibit like this I find of interest…

Saw an article in the NYT this morning on Russia’s woes.  Only noticed the other day that they are suffering so extensively from forest fires, and now it seems the drought situation is reaching a crisis point.  Not good.  Also, notice the chart showing how the price of wheat has skyrocketed in July.

Lastly, in the American Historical Association’s AHA Today: What We’re Reading, there is a link to a new plugin for WordPress called Anthologize, produced by the good folks at George Mason University.  It’s supposed to be a tool for pulling content from your blog for publishing, pdfs, organizing, that sort of thing.  Looks interesting, and I’m probably going to give it a try sooner or later (though I don’t know why on earth I would create pdfs out of my blog work; it’s not as though was lit or something…darn, that sounded kinda high brow.  oh well…).

  1. The only thing with Anthologize is that I’ve heard you have to be on the non-free version of WordPress to use it. IE, you need to have your own domain. I haven’t tried it yet myself, but if that’s the case, then I don’t think I’ll be able to check it out for awhile yet.
